Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to visit Samoa?

The best time to visit Samoa is during the dry season - May to October, when the weather is warm, sunny and ideal for beaches, snorkelling and exploring.
The wet season, November to April, is hotter and more humid, with a higher chance of tropical rain and cyclones, but it can offer fewer crowds and better travel deals.

How long should I spend in Samoa?

Most New Zealand travellers spend 5 to 7 nights in Samoa.
If you want to explore both Upolu and Savai’i, allow 7 to 10 nights for a more relaxed experience.

Where to go on holiday in Samoa?

Top destinations include:

  • Upolu is home to Apia, beaches and To Sua Ocean Trench
  • South Coast (Upolu) boasts majestic waterfalls, stunning beaches and scenic drives
  • Savai’i is quieter, more traditional, and has lava fields and blowholes

A mix of Upolu and Savai’i offers the best overall experience.

Is Samoa a good holiday destination for New Zealanders?

Yes, Samoa is a popular Pacific escape for Kiwis thanks to short flight times from Auckland (approximately 4 hours), warm tropical weather year-round and rich Polynesian culture with authentic experiences.

How to find the best holiday package to Samoa?

Speak to your local House of Travel Samoa specialist and check out our latest holiday deals. We’ll help you book flights and accommodation, decide the best time for your trip and look for inclusions like breakfast, transfers and tours.

Do I need a visa for Samoa from NZ?

No, New Zealand passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 60 days.
You’ll need a valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your return date and proof of onward or return travel. Stay up to date on visa requirements on Safe Travel.

Where to stay in Samoa?

Samoa offers a wide range of accommodation. Apia is convenient with restaurants and cultural experiences. The South Coast, Upolu, has beachfront resorts and natural attractions. Savai’I offers traditional stays with eco-lodges and makes for a quieter island escape.

Options range from beachfront fales (traditional huts) to full-service resorts.

What should I pack for my trip to Samoa?

Pack light and practical:

  • Breathable clothing and swimwear
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  • Insect repellent
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light jacket for evenings

Include modest clothing for visiting villages and cultural sites.

Do I need travel insurance for Samoa?

Yes, travel insurance is strongly recommended. Make sure your policy covers medical expenses, water activities and excursions, and travel delays or cancellations.

Can I use New Zealand dollars in Samoa?

No, Samoa uses the Samoan tala (WST). Cards are accepted in major hotels and Apia, but cash is handy for local shops, markets and buses.

Is Samoa safe for travellers from New Zealand?

Samoa is generally safe and welcoming. Take normal precautions like securing valuables, and be cautious when driving, especially at night. Always follow local advice around ocean conditions.

Can you drink tap water in Samoa?

Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Stick to bottled or filtered water, especially outside resorts.

Do I need to hire a car to get around in Samoa?

Hiring a car is one of the best ways to explore Samoa at your own pace.
You’ll need a local temporary driver’s license, usually arranged through rental companies.
Be mindful of animals and pedestrians on the roads, and driving conditions at night.

How can I get around Samoa without a car?

Local buses are affordable but do run on island time. Taxis and hotel transfers are good options, and guided tours.

To travel between islands, take the ferry between Upolu and Savai’i.

How much does a Samoa holiday cost from NZ?

Samoa offers good value. Meals can cost anywhere between $10 to $30 NZD and accommodation ranges from budget, mid-range and some luxury too. Activities are usually affordable and package deals can often provide the best value.

Where is the best place for snorkelling in Samoa?

Top snorkelling spots include:

  • Lalomanu Beach (Upolu), boasts clear water and vibrant reefs
  • Giant Clam Sanctuary is a conservation area with unique marine life
  • Manase Beach (Savai’i) is quieter and well-known for reef snorkelling
  • Piula Cave Pool offers iconic freshwater swimming you won’t want to miss

What are the best things to do in Samoa?

Though you’ll be tempted to lay on the beach all day, there are many fun activities to experience in Samoa. Swim at To Sua Ocean Trench and do chase waterfalls like Papapapaitai Falls for breathtaking natural experiences. Explore lava fields and blowholes on Savai’I for fascinating landscapes and immerse yourself in a cultural tour or fiafia night. But if an all-day beach day is on your agenda - we recommend that too, with an occasional dip underwater to marvel the vibrant marine life.

What are some family-friendly activities in Samoa?

Samoa is a great family destination, with plenty of child-friendly activities. To Sua Trench and beach days never go amiss, snorkelling through epic marine reserves. Let the kids meet the turtles, gently gliding through Savai’I’s turtle sanctuary. The whole family will be entertained at a cultural show and village experience, really witnessing the beauty of island life.

What cultural etiquette should I follow in Samoa?

Respect local culture. Dress modestly in villages, covering shoulders and knees, remove your shoes before entering homes and be mindful of closures on Sunday - Samoa’s religious day of rest. Always be respectful when participating in cultural ceremonies and visiting communities.

Do I need cash or can I use cards in Samoa?

Both are useful. Cards work well for resorts and larger businesses, while cash is handy for markets, buses and smaller vendors.

What apps should I use in Samoa?

Helpful apps include:

  • Google Maps for navigation
  • WhatsApp is often used for bookings
  • Airline apps for travel updates

House of Travel Rotorua

My love for travel began early - at 19, I left New Zealand with a one-way ticket to London to start my OE, and I've never looked back. I spent eight years living overseas, including four incredible years in London, where I explored Europe extensively. (Barcelona still has my heart!)

I began my travel career in Melbourne in 2004, and knew I'd found my dream career. Even know, I still smile every day coming to work - I truly LOVE what I do.

I did step away from the travel industry for a few years to raise my family, but the pull of travel was simply too strong. Coming back confirmed what I already knew: there is nothing else I would rather be doing. No two days are ever the same, and helping to create someone's dream holiday is a true privilege.

Helping clients plan their adventures brings me so much joy. I specialize in point-to-point Europe itineraries, and I'm especially passionate about tours and cruising. Whether you're planning a romantic escape, a multi-generational family holiday, a tailor-made Europe itinerary or a cruising holiday, I'll work with you to create a trip that fits within your budget and needs.

I pride myself on attention to detail and prompt turnaround times with my work. I believe I also go above and beyond for my clients - many now see me more as a friend, because we've built such strong relationships. Whether it's your first trip or your tenth, I'm here to make your journey smooth, exciting, and unforgettable from start to finish.

I'm known for being friendly, bubbly, and a great listener. I'll take the time to understand your needs and offer thoughtful advice and suggestions to make your trip the best it can be.

I live on our dairy farm in Reporoa with my Husband Mathew and our three young children, who go to school in Rotorua. We are a busy sporting family, so I understand the #mumlife juggle and the importance of taking time out for a well-earned holiday, either as a family or for a lush couples' getaway!

Some of our favourite family trips have been around Vietnam and to the theme parks on the Gold Coast, and next on our list with the kids in Japan. For my husband and I, a favourite recent trip was to Bali - the beachfront cocktails were amazing! Our next couples' getaway is to Langkawi in Malaysia!

Don't just dream about it - lets start planning. Get in touch today and let me turn your travel dreams into your next boarding pass.
