Spectacular coast-hugging drive, endless sunshine, scenic national parks, incredible outdoor experiences— we’re big fans of iconic road trips, and when we think of California, we picture ourselves driving along the scenic Highway One, with Big Sur on one side, listening to The Beach Boys and feeling the breeze. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, our North America specialists can make it a reality with this amazing itinerary that covers the best of the Golden State.
Your epic journey begins in San Francisco, where you'll soak up the charm of the Golden Gate City, sip wine in Napa Valley, before experiencing the wilderness of Yosemite. Marvel at 17-Mile Drive’s ‘The Lone Cypress’ before joining Highway 1 to experience the stunning coastline. Then, you’ll cruise south on the iconic Highway One, the ultimate road trip route, and drive along the breathtaking coast, stopping at Santa Barbara and Malibu, until you reach Los Angeles, where you'll spend your final days exploring the dynamic City of Angels. We'll make sure you don't miss a thing, and give you inside scoop on the best roads to turn to enjoy the views, the must see pit-stops, best places to go for food, and arrange stays that leave you wanting for more. And for those craving an extra thrill, why not embrace true American style and cruise down the coast in a Mustang?
Day 1
Start off your amazing adventure in San Fransisco. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz Island, offering day or night tours (perfect for busy schedules), San Francisco has it all. Taste the classic SF clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf, shop and explore in Union Square, admire the Painted Ladies from "Full House," or savour the delicious cuisine in Chinatown. We’ll help you make the best use of your time in this vibrant city.
And for a fun way to see the sights, we'll arrange for you to ride an electric bike along the waterfront, over the bridge, and to Sausalito. You'll love the views, the breeze, and the freedom of riding at your own pace.
We also highly recommend Painted Ladies Tours, their City Tour and their Wine Country tour, both are absolutely fantastic and are done in a VW combi van- classic!
“For the best bars, go to Dogpatch area, it’s more a local suburb and has some cool bars. Our favourites are Ungrafted (wine bar) and Dogpatch Saloon (cocktails).”
Day 2
A short hour and a half drive from San Francisco and you’ll arrive at Napa Valley. Surrounded by rolling vines, you’ll instantly feel at peace. Leave San Francisco early and have breakfast at the Oxbow Public Market in Napa, a bustling food market with everything from bakeries to restaurants. Then drive to di Rosa, an art preserve on the Carneros Highway that has a large collection of Bay Area contemporary art. On your way back to Napa, stop at the colourful Carneros Inn for lunch at their Boonfly Café or FARM Restaurant.
Wake up early for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley with Aloft, followed by a sparkling wine breakfast. It’s one of those lifetime experiences you’ll never forget. Then spend the afternoon wandering around the charming town of St. Helena.
“Take a tour of the wineries in the area by Napa Valley Wine Train or for something special enjoy a three hour dining excursion.”
Day 3
The third drive of this classic California road trip will have you cruising through the rolling hills of old Gold Rush Country. Next, you’ll climb the curvy Sierra Nevada roads to arrive at the majestic National Park – Yosemite. Once in Yosemite, spend two days experiencing nature at its most breathtaking. From the towering granite carved out by glaciers, to the ethereal and therapeutic silence, soak up your surroundings as you spend the next few days hiking alongside a Conservancy ranger by day and stargazing by night.
Don’t feel like hiking? With over 20 kilometres of paved bike paths throughout the valley you can explore by bike, which are available for rent at the visitor’s centre
“Over the summer months Yosemite can be very busy. If driving, leave your car in one of the parking lots and take the free shuttle around the park. Just remember which parking lot your car is in! ”
Day 4
Travel down the breathtaking Coastal Highway 1, with the Pacific Ocean crashing against the rocks on your right and stunning landscapes stretching out on your left. See gorgeous vistas and wildlife along the scenic 17-Mile Drive, pass by the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, and explore the charming coastal towns of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey.
Stay overnight in Monterey and visit the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman’s Wharf and famous Cannery Row. In the early evening, cruise along the iconic 17-Mile Drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a quaint cobblestone downtown with great shopping, amazing food, galleries, and hiking trails that are quintessential California. Roughly 2 hours south of San Francisco and feels like an entirely different country.
“Make sure you go to Carmel Bakery in the town centre – California’s oldest bakery. Try their pastries and deli sandwiches – we love their massive soft Bavarian pretzels and Italian biscotti.”
Day 5
The Big Sur coastline is what we all dream of when planning this trip! Head southbound on one of the most scenic 100 miles of this California road trip, passing over the iconic Bixby Bridge while waves crash against the rugged rocks just below the highway along Big Sur. This route takes you across twisting road, most amazing cliffs, rivers and bridges, so make sure your car roof is down to experience them in all their glory.
“Further down the coast, make sure you make a stop to visit Hearst Castle, which perches on The Enchanted Hill”
Day 6
After a mind-blowing five hours’ drive arrive Santa Barbara and spend a day or two exploring the American Riviera. Built in a charming Mediterranean style; this upmarket town is one of the road trip’s highlights. Walk along the palm tree-lined beach, head out to tour the historic Old Mission in Santa Barbara established in 1786 and taste wines at an estate in Santa Ynez Valley.
“Stop for lunch at Nepenthe, a slightly new-age restaurant that’s been serving brunch and lunch at the Southern tip of Big Sur for over 60 years.”
Day 7
Continue driving south along the Pacific Coast Highway, passing Malibu’s beaches and coastal homes until you reach Santa Monica in Los Angeles. Santa Monica, with its “Baywatch” beaches and old-fashioned Pier, is a worthy finish to the day. Hire a bike and cruise the boardwalk to Venice Beach or shop your heart out at the Beverly Centre in Beverly Hills or find a bargain at Citadel Outlets. Take a half-day tour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills in style and comfort. See the avenue of stars, the Hollywood sign, Rodeo Drive and then go back to the iconic beaches for some sun or a drink by the Santa Monica pier.
Spend the last two days living the California dream – a blend of shopping, surfing and sunshine.
“Head to a basketball game at the Staples Centre in Downtown L.A., home of the Lakers and the Clippers. And, don’t forget to buy a corn dog for a true American experience.”
